The St. Louis race, now in its 17th year, is one of the largest events in the country. Since its beginning, more than one-million local race participants have helped raise nearly $40 million to support local, life-saving breast cancer screenings, breast health education and patient support services to women, men and families in our community who are most in need and most at risk. These dollars also support cutting-edge breast cancer research.
A number of City employees participated in the race, including Bee-Fit Wellness Coordinator Lisa Banotai and 42 employees from City Collector of Revenue Gregory F.X. Daly's Office. Mayor Francis G. Slay offered greetings during the opening ceremony and was joined by several staff members.

According to Komen St. Louis, one in eight women in the U.S. will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. In 1980, the five-year relative survival rate for women diagnosed with early stage breast cancer (cancer confined to the breast) was about 74 percent. Today, that number is 99 percent. Progress is being made and funds from the annual Komen St. Louis Race for the Cure are playing an important role in the fight.
