FAA Approves STL's Master Plan
STL's Airport Director Releases a Statement on Where We Go from Here
St. Louis Lambert International Airport Director Rhonda Hamm-Niebruegge released the following statement on the Federal Aviation Administration’s approval of the airport’s master plan.
“The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has approved STL’s 2023 airport master plan, which lays out proposed improvements to meet air travel demand through 2040. The most notable projects in the plan are consolidating all commercial airline passenger activities into a single new terminal, along with roadway improvements, and a larger parking garage. Some 21 million passengers are expected by 2040, about 34 percent more than the recent peak year of 2019. Public surveys done during the airport master plan revealed that there is much public interest in a bigger garage as well as more concessions and a simpler roadway, all of which are achieved with the plan. The new consolidated terminal will sit on the site of Terminal 1, which dates from 1956, with only the historic domes being retained. Terminal 2, which has been used by Southwest Airlines since 1998, will be repurposed for yet-to be determined uses.
"The plan was publicly presented in May of 2022, and while now approved by the FAA, is still subject to the agency’s environmental review process as well as airline commitments of financial support. STL and the FAA held a public scoping meeting last December to gather input from the public and governmental agencies about their environmental concerns to be addressed in the environmental planning process. Environmental planning is expected to start later this year and will include another public meeting, and airline negotiations are ongoing. STL expects to start architectural design next year.”
