Board of Aldermen passes criminal justice reform bill

This past Friday, Board of Aldermen President Lewis Reed signed into law Board Bill 105, sponsored by President Reed and 18th Ward Ald. Terry Kennedy - Chairman of the Public Safety Committee.
The bill authorizes the Mayor to enter into an agreement with the Missouri Foundation for Health and submit a grant to develop a Criminal Justice Coordinating Council. The Criminal Justice Coordinating Council will work to reform pre-trial bail; reduce the average daily jail population by enhancing policies; increase alternatives to jail for people dealing with mental illness, substance abuse issues and more.
“I am proud to sponsor these efforts. It’s no secret that our criminal justice system needs reform. By implementing these progressive policies in our City, we are one step closer to change,” said Reed.
The bill will need approval by the Board of Estimate & Apportionment to expend the funds received from the grant.
