Overview

The practice of submitting and voting on resolutions is a typical part of the legislative business. Resolutions are usually for multiple purposes:

  • Resolutions express consensus on matters of public policy: lawmakers routinely deliver criticism or support on a broad range of social issues, legal rights, court opinions, and even decisions.
  • Resolutions are passed for internal, administrative purposes.
  • Courtesy resolutions are created for the purpose of honoring an individual or organization that has made a mark on the history of the City of St. Louis. They are the highest honor any individual or organization can receive from the Board of Aldermen.
