Overview
On December 14, 2021, the City of St. Louis Board of Aldermen unanimously passed Ordinance 71443 which outlines the new boundaries for the City’s 14 new wards. For the first time in over 100 years, the City of St. Louis will be reducing the amount of wards from 28 to 14.
The Legislation Committee of the Board of Aldermen publicly met for months to create a fourteen-ward map that is fair, equitable and legal. Board Bill 101, sponsored by Board of Aldermen President Lewis Reed and 10th ward Alderman Joe Vollmer, outlines the final map for City of St. Louis.
In 2012, the voters voted to reduce the number of wards from 28 to 14 after the release of the 2020 Census numbers. The process to redistrict the wards began after the release of the 2020 Census numbers in late September 2021.
What is Redistricting?
Redistricting is a process that legislative bodies undertake every ten years after the release of the decennial US Census. The purpose of redistricting is to ensure every individual’s vote counts in accordance to the Voting Rights Act by evenly adjusting district boundaries based on population and the number of districts without diluting minority voices. District boundaries for federal, state and local elected offices are redrawn to reflect new population data and shifting populations.
Redistricting is important because it determines how our electoral boundaries will be shaped for the next ten years. The location of where district lines are drawn impact the neighborhood's ability to elect fair representation.
For St. Louis residents, your aldermanic representation and ward number will change following the April 4, 2023 municipal general election.
