Shontae Fluelen
(Shontae) loves connecting with the community and feels lucky to have so many opportunities to talk with people from all over the city about various health-related issues and what challenges they face.
(Her) career advice is to always approach everything from a place of learning. Take advantage of available training and be open to learning from those around you. We work with so many amazing, talented people! You never know what they will impart to you that may positively impact your work or life in general. "Iron Sharpens Iron"
(Her) mother is her inspiration and taught her the importance of always being unapologetically, your best self! She also taught Shontae the power of respect, discernment, and to laugh.
July 15, 2022:
Matt Haslam
Matt Haslam is a Senior Epidemiologist at the Department of Health where he investigates disease trends and provides support for the critical programs within the Department. In his 3 years, Matt's contributions have helped shape many important areas that affect our community including Environmental Health, COVID-19, and Violence Prevention.
Matt's favorite part about working in public health is building relationships with partners and stakeholders to address difficult health issues. He serves as co-chair and public health representative of the St. Louis Regional Comparative Modeling Network, which brings together local public health systems, academics, and stakeholders to discuss research projects and encourage collaborative data sharing across the STL region.
Outside of work, Matt is an avid chess player and enjoys backcountry camping.

Michelle Turner
Michelle Turner has been employed with the City of St. Louis for 27 years. As the Executive Secretary II to the Director, she manages the schedule and helps implement many policy procedures that contribute to the department's overall operations.
Her tenure has given her a unique understanding of working in city government. She never hesitates to share helpful advice and insight that empowers her colleagues.
We appreciate her commitment and dedication to the Department of Health.

Food Establishment Inspectors
In 2021, our Food Establishment Inspectors preformed more than 6,200 inspections.
Inspectors visit grocery stores, restaurants, schools, daycares, and food trucks, and inspect food stands at weekend festivals.

Animal Control Officers
The City's Animal Care and Control Officers ensures the health and safety of St. Louis City residents and companion animals through the enforcement of pet-related ordinances, as well as the promotion of pet safety and responsible pet ownerships.

Tyrell Manning
(Tyrell's) drive to succeed is rooted in the commitment to serve my community. He wants to help move the needle toward equity in public health. It is rewarding to know that his work not only addresses the disparities in marginalized communities but offers solutions.
(He is) centered on his purposes which is fueled by a passion attributed to my ancestors and to those impacted by not only HIV/AIDS but ALL health disparities. I believe that every human being deserves access to quality healthcare services.
To stay motivated during times of uncertainty, we must give ourselves grace, remember to breathe with intention and remember to center your wellness. Without health and wellness, we cannot live life fully.

Lakiska Stephenson
Lakiska experienced a "full circle joyous moment when she received a phone call from a former CPR trainee that intersected her personal and professional life.
The trainee called Lakiska to thank her for helping to save her son's life. She told Lakiska that if it were not for the techniques she had learned during those classes, her son probably would not have survived. Little did she know, that Lakiska's passion for teaching CPR came from a crisis moment many years ago when she had to save her own son's life at 6 weeks old.
Her passion about the work in the community, especially the CPR training classes, is truly a gift to our team at the St. Louis Department of Health.

Tammy McNeil
Tammy was recently recognized by the International Institute of St. Louis for her work with the refugee health program, a collaboration between agencies providing medical screenings to newly arriving refugees in St. Louis.
