April 1 - April 7 is National Public Health Week. This year’s theme, Public Health is ROI (Return on Investment) - Saves Lives, Saves Money,  emphasizes saving lives and curbing health care spending by highlighting  the importance of prevention and the value of a well-supported public health system.

In the business world, a return on investment, or ROI, refers to the amount of profit made in relation to the capital invested. ROI in the world of public health oftentimes refers to avoided medical cost due to investments in prevention and early disease detection.

To celebrate National Public Health Week, as an individual, make just one positive change a day to improve your health. Eating healthy foods, participating in regular physical activity, avoiding tobacco and staying up to date on recommended vaccines can make an immense difference in helping you live a longer, healthier life. You'll notice the return on your investment.

Prevention of disease stretches across all aspects of our lives, not just fitness and nutrition. Healthy homes and workplaces are also essential elements in the prevention investment. Raising awareness in these areas, the City of St. Louis Health Department will be sponsoring several events.
