Celebrate National Walking Day this evening by joining the City of St. Louis Department of Health, Gateway Greening, Trailnet, Great Rivers Greenway, GirlTrek and the American Heart Association in a two-mile walk around the Dutchtown neighborhood. The fun starts at Urban Eats Café, 3301 Meramec Street at 5 p.m. The walk will last about an hour and the pace will be slow to medium.

Mayor Francis Slay has identified reducing obesity by 5 percent in the City of St. Louis by 2018 as a priority in his Sustainability Action Agenda. The Department of Health has released an Obesity Plan for the City to help meet this goal.

“This fun Dutchtown neighborhood walk is a great example of efforts to achieve the obesity plan goal of supporting collaborations to prevent obesity,” said Melba Moore, Commissioner of Health. “Six community partners and the Dutchtown neighborhood have put together this activity for people to increase their physical activity and reduce the risk for obesity.”

Thirty-three percent of City of St. Louis adults are overweight and 31 percent are obese, as reported by the Regional Health Commission. Being overweight or obese is a risk factor for many diseases, including hypertension, diabetes, and heart disease.

Walking is inexpensive exercise that can improve heart health and prevent and reduce obesity and associated diseases.
