CITY RECEIVES ADDITIONAL $8 MILLION

FOR HOMELESS PROGRAMS

St. Louis – Mayor Francis G. Slay announced today that the City of St.   Louis, through the Department of Human Services, had been awarded $8 million for homeless assistance projects from the Department of Housing & Urban Development (HUD). Under the 2009 Continuum of Care (CoC) competitive grants process, HUD, through their Supportive Housing Program (SHP), is awarding approximately $1.348 billion to cities and states across the country. The awards provide funding for transitional and permanent housing programs and supportive services.

The additional $8 million announced today will provide the continuation of several current programs administered by local agencies within the City’s Continuum of Care.

Bill Siedhoff, Human Services Director said, “This funding, combined with the $8.4 million in stimulus funding we received in May of this year, is going to allow us to dramatically accelerate our efforts in meeting the goals of the City’s 10-Year Plan to End Chronic Homelessness that we implemented in 2005”.

The City of St. Louis has seen a 30% reduction in homelessness in the past three years.

The following are agencies funded through this $8 million award: Community Alternatives, Covenant House, DD Resources, Doorways, Employment Connection, Humanitri, Missouri Dept. of Mental health, Peter & Paul Community Services, Shalom House, St. Louis Transitional Hope House, St. Patrick Center, St. Philippine Home, St. Vincent de Paul, and YWCA.

For more information on these and other homeless service programs, please contact the Homeless Services Division of the Department of Human Services at 314-657-1704.
