City of St. Louis Goes Google
A letter to City employees about the switch to Google Apps
This article is 12 years old. It was published on June 15, 2012.
Dear City Employee:
You probably have heard that the City of St. Louis is Going Google. In less than two weeks, we are switching our email provider from GroupWise to Gmail as part of migration to Google Apps for Government. Google Apps for Government is a very user-friendly email, contacts, and calendar service that will provide more accessibility and features to help you communicate and collaborate. I strongly encourage you to visit https://sites.google.com/site/cityofstl/ to learn more about the exciting suite of services.
We want to make your transition to Google Apps as easy as possible for you. So far, more than 200 of your co-workers have switched to Gmail as our Early Adopters. They have had a very positive experience. Over the last month, Early Adopters have provided ITSA, Personnel, and Google with feedback so that your move to Google is as smooth as possible.
You will get your Gmail account on Monday, June 25th. (Don’t worry - all of your emails, contacts and calendar items will move for you!) It is very important that over the next few weeks you read all correspondence to your current email account from GoingGoogle@stlouis-mo.gov. Those emails will contain instructions and information about your new email account.
You may have noticed that the City’s email domain name has changed. Our new domain is name@stlouis-mo.gov, which is the same as our website address. There’s absolutely no need to rush out and print new cards or stationery. Every email sent to the old name@stlouiscity.com will be forwarded to your email for the foreseeable future.
There are various training opportunities available to you. You can train online at your own pace, through webinars, or in person through the City’s Personnel Department’s classes. You can learn more about these opportunities by visiting the website referenced in the first paragraph. Also, on our “Go Live” date of Monday, June 25th, dozens of Google Guides (co-workers trained in Google Apps), ITSA staff and visitors from Google will be on site to provide you with support and assistance.
I thank each of you for your patience and support as we switch to a better, more reliable email service. If you have any questions, email the St. Louis Going Google Team at GoingGoogle@stlouis-mo.gov or call ITSA Help Desk at 622-4530.
Sincerely,
Mayor Slay
