St. Louis Opens Region's First Bicycle Commuter Station

 

St. Louis, MO (April 28, 2011) – The City of St. Louis, Partnership for Downtown St. Louis, Trailnet, Great Rivers Greenway and founding sponsors joined Mayor Francis Slay today at the Grand Opening & Dedication of the new Downtown Bicycle Station.

 

"The Downtown Bicycle Station is the perfect complement to the miles of bike trails and bike lanes in the City," said Mayor Slay. "I'm proud that the region's first bike commuter station is located Downtown. We are building a City that provides an attractive way of life - and this station will allow more commuters to be less dependent on personal vehicles."

 

The Downtown Bicycle Station, located at 1011 Locust Street in the 411 Building at 10th and Locust streets is 1,450 square feet, offers secure access and features more than 100 bike racks, showers and locker rooms…ideal for those cyclists commuting to work.  It is also located next to Urban Shark, a new 3,500 square foot full service bike shop offering all necessary bike equipment, repairs and bike rentals.

 

The Downtown CID will manage the Downtown Bicycle Station under contract with the City, as well as contract with Trailnet for marketing and membership services and Big Shark to provide facility operations to help ensure the station’s success. “We are proud to join with the City and our partners to realize this key amenity to making Downtown more walkable and bikeable---a key goal of the Downtown Next Plan,” says Maggie Campbell, Partnership for Downtown St. Louis President & CEO.

 

Later this Summer, Trailnet, the region’s leading bicycle/pedestrian advocacy group, will be relocating their 20 employees to the 411 Building as well and occupy approximately 4,500 square feet of space. Ann Mack, Executive Director of Trailnet adds, "Trailnet is excited for this endpoint bicycle facility and the barriers it will remove for commuters."

 

The Downtown Bicycle Station, in addition to Metro light rail and bus service, the Downtown Trolley, WeCar and Ridefinders makes Downtown a great neighborhood to enjoy for all transportation modes.
