HAMPTON, VA - This weekend, Mayor Tishaura O. Jones will visit her alma mater Hampton University at the invitation of University President Dr. William R. Harvey to be the featured speaker for their commencement ceremony for the 2020 and 2021 graduating classes.

“I am honored to be offered the opportunity to speak to our next generation of rising leaders,” said Mayor Tishaura O. Jones. “Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) have been invaluable for developing lifelong connections that graduates can benefit from, even decades after they receive their degree.”

“Mayor Tishaura Jones is a shining example of what Hampton does every day: prepare the best and the brightest to lead our great nation and the world at large," said Hampton University President Dr. William R. Harvey. “Her message will be a memorable addition to a special day for our graduates and their families.”

The graduation celebration combines the graduating classes of 2020 and 2021 that had to postpone due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As a 1994 graduate of the historic Black university, Mayor Jones’ commencement speech will recall memories of her time attending Hampton, the lessons she learned both on and off campus, and a message of hope and determination for those whose lives have made unexpected turns because of the pandemic.

The event will be live streamed on Saturday, December 11, at 10:30 am EST/9:30 am CST. The broadcast can be viewed on Hampton University’s website.
