Mayor Tishaura O. Jones Celebrates St. Louis in Filmmaker Ken Burns’ Honor Your Hometown Campaign

Mayor Tishaura O. Jones joins legendary entertainers, including Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood, Jon Batiste, Dolly Parton, Miranda Lambert, and Kristin Chenoweth - along with luminaries from the nation’s most important cultural, community service and veterans’ institutions - and fellow elected leaders from all 50 states today to launch Honor Your Hometown.

“St. Louis is a remarkable city full of incredible people, and I’m proud to call it my hometown,” said Mayor Tishaura O. Jones. “I’m proud to highlight St. Louis’ powerful history, and join together with leaders from all 50 states to demonstrate there’s more that unites us than divides us.”

The campaign, running from today through Thanksgiving, kicks off with the release of more than 150 powerful and poignant videos from some of America’s most revered institutions and beloved individuals, such as the late General Colin Powell, sharing personal, touching stories of their hometowns and the role they play in bringing us together as Americans. Mayor Tishaura O. Jones’ remarks highlight the quiet significance of St. Louis’ history in the Civil Rights movement, noting “from the Freedom Suits to the Civil Rights movement to the modern fight to make sure Black Lives Matter, our city has a long history in the fight for justice even in the face of overwhelming opposition.”

The Honor Your Hometown campaign is headlined by renowned documentary producer Ken Burns, and Country Music Hall of Famer Marty Stuart to encourage Americans to celebrate their hometowns and reflect on their shared experiences and common values. Ultimately, this first-of-its-kind national effort is designed to foster greater national unity at a time of unparalleled division.

“This is exactly the kind of initiative we need right now,” says filmmaker Ken Burns. “A celebration of where we come from and a reminder that we should be hopeful because our common bonds and values outweigh whatever differences we might have.”

Honor Your Hometown, a non-partisan, non-profit initiative, encourages all Americans to join this important effort to celebrate hometowns across the nation to help foster greater national unity. Anyone interested in participating is welcome to post short videos on their individual social media platforms, highlighting what they love most about their hometown, using the campaign hashtag: #HonorYourHometown.
