Mayor Lyda Krewson has appointed Irene Agustin as the City’s new director of Human Services. Agustin previously served as the department’s chief program manager for the Division of Homeless Services. She has been with the City since 2015.

“Irene’s dedication to serving our most at-risk populations will help us transform the way we deliver services,” Mayor Lyda Krewson said. “She brings knowledge, experience, and enthusiasm to a critical area of need in our City.”

“I am honored to serve as director of Human Services and I’m focused on developing strategies to better deliver human services to the citizens of St. Louis,” Agustin said.

Agustin is a native St. Louisan who has dedicated her career to working with vulnerable populations. She holds a bachelor's degree in social work from Creighton University and master's degree in social work from St. Louis University.

Before joining City government, Agustin worked with the Phoenix Crisis Nursery and Central Arizona Shelter Services, building relationships, expanding community outreach and working on strategies to improve shelter and supportive services for homeless populations.

Since 2015, Agustin has worked for the City, engaging partners and working closely with City departments to open the Biddle House Opportunities Center and to strengthen the Continuum of Care network to address homelessness.

"Tremendous progress has been made in our community,” Agustin said. “But I'm under no illusions; there is still a lot more work we need to do. The best communities are ones that don't build themselves up on the backs of our most vulnerable and oppressed, but lift each other up so we all thrive and succeed together.”
