Mayor Slay to Visit STL Youth Jobs Worksite

What

Mayor Francis Slay will visit HM Dunn Aerospace to meet a sampling of STL Youth Jobs participants, learn about their successes in their summer jobs and to and to gain a better understanding of the challenges youth are facing in regards to obtaining summer employment.

Why

Regional employers are in demand of a workforce that is equipped with the skills to shrink job market gaps, especially with an emphasis on science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) expertise. In partnership with St. Louis employers, STL Youth Jobs is working to meet those demands by cultivating our future workforce by developing on-the-job work experiences, building skills, and providing mentorship support to St. Louis youth that will lead to long-term career opportunities within St. Louis's highest growth industries.

STL Youth Jobs, now in its fourth year of providing jobs to 16-24 year olds in some of the City's most challenged neighborhoods engages young adults in meaningful employment to reduce crime, increase academic success and build the skills needed to build a lasting career through paid work experience, job readiness training, and career and mentoring services.

• STL Youth Jobs is providing nearly 500 jobs to underserved youth this summer and working with 115 employers from small businesses to large corporations, including Monsanto, SSM Health and Emerson.
• 77% of last summer's participants report they would not have had a summer job without STL Youth Jobs.
• More than 50% reported that STL Youth Jobs was their first job.
• 94% of 2015 employers agreed to participate again this summer.

HM Dunn Aerospace, an engineering and manufacturing company has worked with STL Youth Jobs over the past three years and has provided summer job opportunities to eight young people during that time through STL Youth Jobs in departments such as engineering and shipping and receiving. Mayor Slay will meet HM Dunn's STL Youth Jobs employees, including Jarvis Jefferson Bey, who just completed his sophomore year at Southeast Missouri State University and is employed with HM Dunn Aerospace this summer in its engineering department.

Mayor Slay has once again committed nearly $300,000 of City resources to support youth employment in summer 2016.Governor Jay Nixon has also provided funding for an additional 500 jobs this summer. These investments, coupled with private donations, will allow more than 1,000 at-risk teenagers and young adults to gain employment across the City of St. Louis, which exceeds the Mayor's Sustainability Action Agenda goal and is a signature intervention strategy incorporated into the City's Prevention, Intervention, Enforcement, and Reentry (PIER) Plan.
