St. Louis agency on training and employment (SLATE) offers its Summer Jobs Program again in 2010. This is a unique employment program that will provide valuable work experiences to hundreds of young adults ages 18-24. Mayor Slay, a representative from the Governor’s office, and a representative from the Missouri Botanical Garden discussed the importance of this program in a press conference at the Botanical Garden today.

Young adults will have an opportunity to earn $9.00 an hour and receive up to 240 hours of on-the-job training with top-notch employers in the St. Louis area. Participants will be placed in employment with a variety of private sector companies, government agencies and nonprofit organizations. Interested participants, whether young adults or employers, can apply to be part of the 2010 UrbanFORCE.

“This is an excellent program for the young adults of the City of St. Louis,” said Mayor Slay. “It is vitally important for our citizens to gain valuable on-the-job training. A more educated workforce makes St. Louis more attractive for business development and relocation. This program puts our citizens on the right track to success.”

Last summer, the statewide Next-Generation Jobs Team youth employment program, funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), was implemented by SLATE’s Youth Services Department as the City of St. Louis UrbanFORCE. UrbanFORCE provided a life-changing work experience to over 2,045 young adults - a higher total than any other such program in the state of Missouri – and gathered regional and national accolades and received the Governor’s Excellence in Customer Service Award.

“Despite the clear signs of Missouri’s economic recovery, high unemployment among our youthful Missouri workforce remains a challenge,” said Governor Nixon. “Through the Missouri Summer Jobs Program and its counterpart, the State Parks Youth Corps, we are turning that challenge into an opportunity for our young people.”

Persons interested in the 2010 Summer Jobs program may qualify if they are:
  • Between the ages of 18-24
  • St. Louis City residents
  • Meet low-income guidelines
  • Have barriers to employment
