Policy Director
The Policy Director will craft, track and research legislation to execute the Mayor’s platform.
This position reports to the Chief of Staff or, in his absence, the Deputy Chief of Staff. The Policy Director will craft, track and research legislation to execute the Mayor’s platform. They will brief staff on legislative proposals and work with stakeholders to develop legislation. They will work in close collaboration with the City Counselor’s Office to ensure legislation conforms to federal and state guidelines.
Responsibilities
- Draft legislative proposals to actualize the Mayor’s platform.
- Research and suggest policies to consider for the City based on national models.
- Draft policy memos for proactive and reactive legislation.
- Maintain lists of legislation with proposed positions and accompanying supporting documents (memo, fact sheets, etc.)
- Reach out to coalition partners to gather input on policy agenda.
- Estimate the financial implications of proposed municipal legislation or executive actions.
- Develop political strategy in collaboration with Senior Staff and Board Liaison to support desired legislative outcomes.
- As directed by the Chief of Staff, develop funding proposals for federal allocations in collaboration with Senior Staff.
- Propose and monitor budget allocations in collaboration with Senior Staff.
- As needed, assist development agencies in the creation of RFPs, bids, and contracts in collaboration with the City Counselor’s Office.
- Craft community benefits agreements.
- Work in partnership with Senior Staff to ensure that development goals support a wider agenda related to equity, housing, public safety, and environmental justice.
- Assist with federal reporting requirements and KPI creation.
Qualifications
- Experience with the budgeting process at the local, state, and federal level or willingness to learn quickly.
- Previous legislative experience is a plus.
- Extensive knowledge of the legislative process.
