Pay a Traffic Ticket and Plead Guilty Without a Court Appearance

Many minor traffic citations may be paid before the first court date through the Traffic Violations Bureau without a court appearance.

Overview

Many minor traffic citations may be paid before the first court date through the Traffic Violations Bureau without a court appearance. You may find out whether your citation may be paid through TVB by calling Customer Service - (314) 622-3231- during regular business hours Monday through Friday.

The following cases require a court appearance and cannot be paid without a court appearance:

  • You must appear in court for all non-traffic offenses (such as housing and nuisance cases, peace disturbance, petty larceny, resisting, interfering or trash charges).

  • You must also appear in court for serious traffic offenses, such as DUI, Leaving the Scene, Driving While Suspended or Revoked, speeding 20 miles or more over the speed limit, when you have had two or more moving violation convictions within the immediately preceding twenty (24) months, or if your traffic citation involves a motor vehicle accident.

Preparation

Before you pay:

  • call the call Customer Service at 314-622-3231
  • confirm that your traffic citation can be paid without a court appearance
  • confirm the amount of the fine and court costs owed
  • have your traffic citation(s) or the number of your traffic citation(s) available when you call.

    The citation number is a 9 digit number in the upper right hand corner of the first page of the citation.

    If you do not have your citation(s) or citation number(s) you can search for your citation online

When you have confirmed with Customer Service that your citation can be paid without a court appearance and the amount of the fine and costs, you may use any of the methods listed below to pay the citation. 

Instructions

If your citation may be paid without a court appearance, there are several different ways to pay.

Pay Online

  1. Go to Payitstlouis.com
  2. Login as a guest, or through e-mail.
  3. Select > Pay A Municipal Court Ticket
  4. Check your citation number by Ticket Number and Date of Birth
  5. Payment can be through debit or credit card

If your citation cannot be paid without a court appearance, the system will not accept the payment, and you should come to court on the date shown on your citation. 

Pay by Mail

  1. Sign the form for “Appearance, Plea of Guilty and Waiver – Only for Offenses Not Requiring a Court Appearance” found at the bottom of the reverse side of your citation.
  2. Include your signature, address and driver license number. 
  3. Determine the amount of your fine by calling Customer Service at 314-622-3232.
Mail the citation with the signed Appearance, Plea of Guilty and Waiver form along with a money order or certified check for the amount the fine to:

Make sure you mail your payment soon enough to arrive no less than three (3) days before the court date on your citation. Please write your ticket number on your money order or certified check to make certain your payment is properly credited to your case. The court does not accept personal checks.

Do not send cash through the mail

In-Person at City Court 

You may make a payment at the cashier's windows at City Court, 1520 Market, Suite 1120, St. Louis, MO 63103. Please remember that visitors to 1520 Market, including the court area, are required to wear masks at all times. You will need a valid picture ID

A drop box option for payments is available at 1520 Market on the 16th Street side.

A red locked drop box for payments has been installed outside the Court entrance, 1520 Market Street, St. Louis, MO 63103 on the 16th Street side. Drop off payments should be submitted in a sealed envelope. 

  1. Sign the form for “Appearance, Plea of Guilty and Waiver – Only for Offenses Not Requiring a Court Appearance” found at the bottom of the reverse side of your citation.
  2. Include your signature, address and driver license number. 
  3. Determine the amount of your fine by calling Customer Service at 314-622-3232.
Place the citation with the signed Appearance, Plea of Guilty and Waiver form along with payment in a sealed envelope. Make sure to include your name and ticket number(s) to make certain your payment is properly credited to your case. Do not make a payment with cash at the drop box.

If you make a payment by mail or make a drop off payment, you may call the Court or use www.municourt.net [www.municourt.net] to get your new payment date. Please allow seven (7) days after you make your payment before you call the Court.

If you pay by money order or certified check, please write your ticket number on the money order or certified check to make certain you payment is properly credited to you case.
 

Fees

Based on the fine and court costs for your citation. There is small convenience fee if you pay on-line using PayIt.

What to Expect

Your successful payment of your citation in advance and out of court will close your case.

Your payment of your citation constitutes a plea of guilty to the offense charged in the citation and a waiver of your rights of appearance and trial.

The Department of Revenue will assess points against your driving record as required by law for any offense that carries points. The court reports case dispositions to the Department of Revenue electronically within ten (10) days of the disposition.

If you believe that you are not guilty of the offense charged in your citation, you should appear in court on the date indicated on your citation.
