Today, the League of American Bicyclists recognized St. Louis City with a Silver Level Bicycle Friendly Community (BFC) award, an upgrade from the City's previous Bronze Level designation.

The League of American Bicyclists is leading the movement to create a bicycle friendly America for everyone through the BFC program. This program provides a benchmark for communities to evaluate their local conditions and policies while highlighting areas of improvement in engineering/planning, education, enforcement and safety, and encouragement.

Currently, 416 communities within the U.S. are recognized within the five levels of the award - diamond, platinum, gold, silver, and bronze. The Silver Level BFC award recognizes St. Louis City's commitment to improving conditions for bicycling through investment in bicycling promotion, education programs, infrastructure, and pro-bicycling policies.

Jamie Wilson, the City's Bicycle/Pedestrian Coordinator, says, "The City of St. Louis is committed to creating a safe and efficient "Complete Streets" transportation system that benefits motorists, pedestrians, bicyclists, transit users, and people of all abilities. While we are being awarded for our accomplishments in bicycling, it is truly a win for our overall City network as well. Our bicycling achievements to date are only possible through a tremendous team effort including the Mayor, City departments, Great Rivers Greenway, local consultants and advocacy groups. We will all savor this moment, but we will promptly get back to work in order to further improve our City."
