Kids Eat Right Mini-Grants Awarded

Two dietitians from Nutrition Services have recently received grants from the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND) Foundation.  Melissa Ramel, nutrition coordinator for the City of St. Louis Department of Health and Kids Eat Right (KER) Volunteer, was awarded a mini-grant in October from the Kids Eat Right initiative. Ramel recently completed healthy snacking presentations to middle school and high school athletes. The students were provided a handout and on-line link to complete a survey of the presentation. Feedback from the presentation was positive and showed that the topic sparked interest in the students.

Lauren Landfried, another nutrition coordinator and KER Volunteer, was just notified that she has also been awarded a KER mini-grant.Landfried will be providing nutrition education on kid-friendly snacks for both parents and teens in the Saint Louis Public Schools in the next few months. This presents a great opportunity to spread the message of good nutrition further in the St. Louis community.

This brings the total to three KER mini-grants received by Nutrition Services. Last year, Kids Eat Right offered the mini-grant opportunity to promote a curriculum based on eating a healthy breakfast. Lori Jones, the Nutrition Services program manager, was awarded a similar grant last year.

The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Foundation launched their first joint initiative, Kids Eat Right, in November 2010. This volunteer-driven campaign is dedicated to supporting the efforts of the White House to end the childhood obesity epidemic within a generation. Kids Eat Right is a two-tiered campaign aimed to mobilize Academy members to participate in community and school childhood obesity prevention efforts, and also to educate families, communities, and policy makers about the importance of quality nutrition.  For more information on this effort, you can contact Nutrition Services at 314/657-1571 or check out the website at www.kidseatright.org.
