It’s that time of year again as the United Way of Greater St. Louis will begin its annual campaign with a kick-off event on September 4^th.  Again leading the Government Division of the campaign is Bill Siedhoff, Director of the Department of Human Services.  Included in the Government Division are some 70,000 employees from the federal, state, city, county and other entities such as the St. Louis Zoo, the St. Louis Historical Society and the FBI.

 This year’s campaign is being chaired by Greg Boyce, President & CEO of  Peabody Energy, who has recommended that the 2012 goal be set at $72 million.  He stated, “This is almost a 4% increase over our base, and it will require us to raise more than $2.5 million new dollars.”  The Government Division last year raised almost $852,000.

 More than a million people are assisted through the United  Way annually through sponsored organizations such as Grace Hill Settlement House, the St. Louis Crisis Nursery, Urban League of Metropolitan St. Louis, the Red Cross and the Salvation Army.  Additionally, the United  Way is a major partner of the City of St.  Louis particularly in times of emergencies such as we recently experienced with the record setting temperatures this summer.

 Siedhoff said, “I’m honored to again serve as the Chair of the Government Division of the Campaign. Given the slow recovery of the economy, demand for basic services such as housing, food and utility assistance continue to increase making this year’s Campaign as important as ever”. He added, “To reach our goal of $72 million, everyone’s help is desperately needed and just by increasing individual gifts by a few dollars, I’m confident the goal can be met."

 The United Way Campaign is included in the City’s Annual Charitable Campaign which will begin in early September.
