Mayor Francis G. Slay and Human Services Director Bill Siedhoff announced last month that the City of St. Louis has been awarded $372,000 for an additional homeless program, which is in addition to the $9 million received earlier this year from the U.S. Department of Housing & Urban Development (HUD). The grant, totaling $9.37 million, was made under the 2011 Continuum of Care Competition and part of the $1.67 billion awarded nationally, which is up from $1.63 billion last year.
"This is an important grant that will allow the City of St. Louis Continuum of Care to help people get off the streets and into permanent supportive housing," said Mayor Slay. "The City of St. Louis' 10-Year Plan to End Chronic Homelessness has proved to be extremely effective and these funds will allow us to continue our mission."
The City successfully competed with thousands of cities across the country in securing this award that provides funding for more than 20 local programs and organizations. In addition to providing housing for homeless people, services such as job training, healthcare and treatment for alcohol and drugs are offered.
U.S. homelessness fell by 2.1 percent from 2010 to 2011 despite a slow recovery from the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression. Since implementation of the City's 10-Year Plan to End Chronic Homelessness in 2005, the number of homeless people has been reduced from 1,941 to 1,315 in 2011, falling more than 30% in that time period.
"While one homeless person is one too many, we have made great progress in reducing homelessness. Through this additional funding, we are hopeful that even more people can be housed and receive services," said Siedhoff.
