Last week, Mayor Francis G. Slay held a press conference in his office to announce that starting the weekend of Jan. 29, the Gateway EITC Community Coalition would begin offering free tax help to families that had incomes of less than $49,000 in 2010 in St. Louis City, County, St. Charles and the Metro East. The assistance focuses on individuals or families who qualify for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), a federal tax credit. Up to $30 million EITC refunds may go unclaimed in the St. Louis region this year.
