Although the winter has been mild so far, the Department of Health has been working with Heat Up St. Louis to ensure at-risk St. Louis residents will be warm when the cold weather comes.  In early October 2016, the two agencies hosted a Winterizing Utility Forum at The Pavilion at Lemay, in Jefferson Barracks Park.  The event was designed to provide utility assistance to metro area elderly and disabled residents.  The Director of Health, Melba R. Moore, and the Fire Chief Dennis Jenkerson were present to provide support and advice for the residents seeking assistance.  Department of Health staff members were on hand to assist attendees by greeting guests, directing them and providing rain checks for assistance when necessary.  Ameren Missouri, St. Louis County Health Department, People's Community Action Agency, and several other community partners also provided volunteers to ensure great customer service to all who attended.  In the end, more than 4,000 people were helped as a result of this partnership.

Colder weather is on its way and more Health Up St. Louis activities are planned.  The next major event is the "Rise and Shine for Heat Up St. Louis" event planned for Friday, February 10, 2017.  This fundraiser is done in partnership with local Hardee's restaurants and supports the utility assistance provided through Heat Up St. Louis.  Volunteers are needed to support this effort.  If you are a City employee and interested in helping with this worthwhile cause, please contact Shontae Fluelen-Hays at hayss@stlouis-mo.gov.
