Making a Difference in North St. Louis

Two initiatives relating to health and wellness which are led by the City of St. Louis Department of Health were featured on posters on November 10, 2015, at Saint Louis University's third annual "Making a Difference in North St. Louis" Symposium at Cardinal Ritter College Preparatory High School. Registered dietitian Melissa Ramel, acting Coordinator for the Healthy Eating Active Living (HEAL) Partnership, presented a poster highlighting the efforts of the partnership. This poster shared key information about those efforts including how the partnership was formed, the community organizations involved, the current structure of the partnership, key objectives, and current activities. While HEAL has already created additional healthy living awareness in targeted communities within the city, it is poised to do much more. The partnership is structured to aid in reducing obesity in St. Louis by improving access to healthy foods, promoting physical activity, and improving access to health care.

Registered dietitian Lori Jones, Nutrition Services Project Manager, presented a second poster highlighting the recent Move Your Body flash mobs conducted with St. Louis Public Schools (SLPS). This Let's Move! STL activity was previously reported in the City Newsgram. Every elementary school in the SLPS District participated in the district-wide flash mob. The event took place at 2:00 pm on May 8th.  Students performed the Let's Move! Move Your Body dance routine. The day was the culmination of months of learning and practicing the routine, and allowed SLPS students to be physically active in a fun way.

The annual "Making a Difference in North St. Louis" Symposium is an event orchestrated by Saint Louis University's College of Public Health and Social Justice to highlight efforts addressing health and wellness conditions in North St. Louis. The symposium also promotes collaborations among health and wellness agencies and interested community members. Participating agencies presented posters detailing their own efforts in North City.
