On April 8, 1967 Civil Rights activist and gospel legend Mahalia Jackson visited the St. Louis City Medium Security Institution. She had hoped to perform for the detainees, but there were technical difficulties so instead she was given a tour of the facility by then- Warden Charles Head. While there, Ms. Jackson was introduced to detainees and correctional officers alike. She was said to have given those in custody encouragement and support.
