Comptroller Darlene Green and the Women in Public Finance (WPF) awarded Sydney Wright, a student attending Clayton High School, a $1,000 scholarship for her college education. The awards were given at the 15th Annual WPF Conference held in Chicago, IL, Thursday, Oct. 16, 2011.
A special ceremony was held for Wright in the Comptroller's Office recently since she was not able to make the conference. Ivy Neyland-Pinkston, Deputy Comptroller for Finance and Development, wanted to make sure Wright was given the opportunity to have that one-on-one with the Comptroller, who is one of the honorary chairs of the WPF scholarship committee, along with other women in finance from the St. Louis area.
"Women working in public finance want to encourage the next generation of women in high school and college to pursue careers in this viable field. In finance you help improve and build communities, convention centers, airports and recreation centers," said Neyland-Pinkston.
Wright's parents, James and Barbara Wright, were grateful for the scholarship, attention and mentoring their daughter received that day. Wright was one of two students receiving an award from the WPF. Rachel Collins, a student at Lindbergh High School, also was awarded a scholarship to study finance. The WPF awarded some 10 scholarships nationally at their conference this year.
