Board of Aldermen President Lewis Reed to introduce resolution to form special coronavirus committee

Board of Aldermen President Lewis Reed will introduce Resolution 5 at Tuesday’s Board of Aldermen meeting.

The Coronavirus Special Committee will be one centralized committee to receive all reports, data and legislation related to the Coronavirus Pandemic and its impact on the City at the Board of Aldermen. 

“The Coronavirus has already tested our City’s economy, hindered our small businesses, highlighted inequalities in public health and reflected inefficiencies across our region. The Board will need to address these issues and more,” said Reed. “By having one centralized committee to handle these matters, we can be proactive in addressing the needs of our residents and allow for greater coordination across sectors as the pandemic progresses.”

The committee will be composed of the Chairmen of the affected areas of our City by COVID19, such as Convention and Tourism; Ways & Means; Public Safety; Health and Human Services; Education and Youth Matters; Transportation and Commerce and others. 

The committee will handle many tasks including:

• identifying strategies to stabilize the City’s economy;
• finding ways to ensure the continued livelihood of workers protect the investments of business owners and entrepreneurs;
• reduce unnecessary laws and regulations that might be a barrier to the rapid recovery of the local economy;
• analyze potential policies concerning coordination of state and federal stimulus and other relief; and
• recommend other actions or policies that could improve and strengthen the City.

The resolution authorizes the formation of a special committee of the Board of Aldermen and outlines the tasks of the Committee. 

The first meeting of the 2020-2021 Board of Aldermen session is Tuesday, April 21 at 10 a.m. The meeting will be held by webinar video conferencing.
