Today, Mayor Tishaura O. Jones proclaimed February 2022 Black History Month in the City of St. Louis in recognition of the immeasurable contributions Black St. Louisans have made throughout the city’s history.
“St. Louis has been shaped by countless Black leaders who have fought for equity and continue to pave the way for progress,” said Mayor Tishaura O. Jones. “This month, we recognize this powerful history while recommitting efforts to make our region a place where everyone can thrive, across racial lines and different backgrounds.”
This morning, Mayor Jones joined the St. Louis Board of Aldermen African American Caucus outside City Hall for the raising of the Pan-African flag. She then visited the Griot Museum of Black History, St. Louis’ only history museum dedicated to creating a community of lifelong learners who explore, experience and embrace the region's rich and enduring African-American heritage. During the visit, Mayor Jones presented the proclamation to Griot staff and board members.
Celebration of Black history continues beyond today. Mayor Jones will continue to uplift St. Louis Black history by patronizing Black-owned businesses and sharing a series of videos on social media, highlighting key people and events that make St. Louis the quiet leader of the Civil Rights movement.
