ST. LOUIS – Red light runners caught by safety cameras will soon receive a refund for tickets paid between February 11, 2014, and August 19, 2015. The City of St. Louis has been keeping in escrow payments made during that year and a half while the City was waiting on a ruling by the Missouri Supreme Court.

The Court has ruled that while red light safety cameras and speed cameras are indeed permissible law enforcement tools, cities must meet a more rigorous burden of proof in its camera prosecutions; hence, voiding the City's current red light safety camera ordinance, as written.

Red light violators who paid the $100 fine will receive a check in the mail for the full $100 within 15 business days. No other action is required by people who paid; however, if someone does not receive the refund check to which they are entitled, they must come to the Municipal Court at 1520 Market Street (entering off of 16th Street) with a photo ID. A full listing of any returned checks will be posted to the Municipal Court's website. Any monies that were not able to be returned nor were collected by an individual will be sent to the State Treasurer's Unclaimed Property.

More than 56,000 people paid their fines after being caught violating red lights at intersections with safety cameras during the above 18-month period.
