Steps to register a Motor Vehicle in the City of St. Louis

Overview

Residents of the City of St. Louis must declare their motor vehicle with the City Assessor’s Office, but can register their motor vehicle at any Missouri Department of Revenue DMV office. This is done as part of your license plate renewal.

If you live in the City of St. Louis, you may be eligible to renew your plates online at the Missouri Department of Revenue website.

If you are eligible for this convenient option, a Personal Identification Number (PIN) will be printed on your renewal notice.

Preparation

To register your vehicle and receive or renew license plates you must obtain and bring the following to any Missouri Department of Revenue fee office:

or 

  • A property tax waiver from the City Assessor's office if no personal property tax was assessed for the prior year.

    If you have recently moved to the City of St. Louis, you must obtain your property tax waiver from the county in which you lived on January 1st. See additional information for new residents.

In addition, you must provide:

  • The vehicle's title
  • Missouri Highway Patrol safety inspection (not more than 60 days old). Safety inspections are required if the vehicle is more than 10 years old, has over 150,000 miles, or was purchased with an out of state title.
  • Emissions inspection notice (not more than 60 days old), Emissions inspections are required every two years and on every vehicle purchase with the exception of brand new vehicles.
  • Proper identification: Driver's license
  • Proof of car insurance

In Person

  1. City residents may visit any fee office in the state of Missouri. There are two located within city limits:

    Central West End Office
    4041 Lindell Blvd
    St. Louis, MO 63108-3287

    South Kingshighway Office
    4628 South Kingshighway
    St. Louis, MO 63109-0000

  2. Present paid personal property tax receipt or a property tax waiver, and the documents outlined in the preparation section.
  3. Pay total assessed fees by check or credit card.

Online

  1. Find the Personal Identification Number (PIN) printed on your renewal notice.
  2. Use the Begin Online button to register your car online.

What to Expect

  • For registering your vehicle In Person you will have same day car renewal and registration.
  • For online registration, time frames may vary, but you should expect to receive your new tags within 14 business days.

Additional Information

Two Year Registration

If you are applying for a 2-year registration, you will need the past 2 years worth of paid tax receipts.

Relocation

If you have recently moved to the City of St. Louis, you must obtain your property tax waiver from the county in which you lived on January 1st.
