Position Specifications
Incumbents in this position provide basic emergency patient care, monitor vital signs and transport patients. Duties include: responding to calls for emergency medical care; assisting with victim extrications; assisting paramedics with advanced care procedures; operating ambulance and two-way communications equipment and cleaning and replenishing supplies. Positions require shift, weekend, holiday and mandatory overtime assignments. Candidates must provide their availability for shift and weekend assignments on the Availability section of the Employment Application. A shift differential is paid for evening and night work.

Minimum Qualifications
Education: A high school diploma or General Educational Development (G.E.D.) certificate.
Licenses: Applicants must possess and maintain all of the following while employed by the City of St. Louis: a Missouri EMT-B License (Emergency Medical Technician – Basic) and a valid Missouri driver's license. Applicants who possess a EMT-B License from another state must obtain Missouri license reciprocity prior to appointment. Please note type of licenses, numbers and expiration dates on the Employment Application.
Copies of licenses must be submitted with the application.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS: Previous experience as an Emergency Medical Technician.
When completing the Employment History and the Educational/Training History sections of the Employment Application, please be as thorough as possible when describing your education, training and experience relating to this position. Your employment experience and training will be used to determine whether you meet the entrance requirements for this position and to compute your experience and training evaluation. When completing the Employment History section of the application, include reasons for changes in employers and explain any gaps in employment. Incomplete and/or carelessly completed applications will not be considered.
MEDICAL: Candidates will be required to pass an oral swab "Drug Screen" as part of the Medical examination. Incumbents are subject to random Drug Screen and Alcohol Tests as a condition of their employment.
VETERAN'S PREFERENCE POINTS: To be eligible for veteran's preference points, the applicant must submit a copy of their DD 214 Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty with the Employment Application or upon request. The Director of Personnel may, in their discretion, accept alternate documentation.
CITY RESIDENTS PREFERENCE POINTS: City residents who pass an examination for a position in the classified service and do not receive any other preference will receive a five (5) point preference on a scale of 100 points on the exam. An additional one (1) point shall be added to the passing score of City residents who receive any other preference on a scale of 100 points. City residents must have resided in the City for at least one (1) year at the time of filing their application to be eligible for the preference points.
