Position Specifications

Incumbents in this position operate, maintain, and repair stationary engines and mechanical equipment to provide utilities or power for buildings and industrial processes under the training of a Class I licensed Stationary Engineer.  Work involves shift, weekend, and holiday assignments; therefore, candidates must be available for shift work.  A shift differential is paid to full-time employees working evening and night shifts.

Minimum Qualifications

An Associate's degree in Building Maintenance, Building Systems Engineering Technology, or a related field with an emphasis on mechanical and electrical systems.  OR one year of experience assisting in the operation and maintenance of a water treatment facility.  OR two years of experience assisting in the operation and maintenance of industrial equipment.  OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Licenses: Applicants must possess and maintain a Stationary Engineer’s License (Class II Restricted) issued by the City of St. Louis by completion of the working test period. Applicants must also possess and maintain a valid Missouri driver’s license while employed by the City of St. Louis.  Must possess a valid driver's license at the time of filing application.  Please note type of license, number, class, and expiration date on the Employment Application. 

Documentation of academic credentials (if applicable) must be submitted with the Employment Application.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:  Experience assisting in the operation and maintenance of high pressure boilers and steam generators, chillers in excess of 500 tons, building automation systems, emergency generators or related equipment.

MEDICAL:  Candidates will be required to pass an oral swab "Drug Screen" as part of the Medical examination.

VETERAN'S PREFERENCE POINTS:  To be eligible for veteran's preference points, the applicant must submit a copy of their DD 214 Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty with the Employment Application or upon request.  The Director of Personnel may, in their discretion, accept alternate documentation.

CITY RESIDENTS PREFERENCE POINTS: City residents who pass an examination for a position in the classified service and do not receive any other preference will receive a five (5) point preference on a scale of 100 points on the exam. An additional one (1) point shall be added to the passing score of City residents who receive any other preference on a scale of 100 points.  City residents must have resided in the City for at least one (1) year at the time of filing their application to be eligible for the preference points.

Employees assigned to St. Louis Lambert International Airport may be eligible for a commuting allowance of $180.00 bi-weekly.  A ten-year background investigation will be conducted in accordance with FAA regulations for positions at St. Louis Lambert International Airport.
