Position Specifications

Incumbents in this position are responsible for coordinating with Human Services, St. Louis Area Agency on Aging, and all bureaus of the Department of Health, in addition to a variety of community-based agencies to ensure that the nutritional component of chronic diseases and health problems most common within the city (cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, HIV/AIDS, maternal/child health/outcomes, and lead poisoning) are included in the comprehensive health promotion and education plan. Duties include promoting proper nutrition and diet in the community, developing presentations to promote initiatives, and researching grant funding opportunities. Additional responsibility will be the development, expansion, and integration of the Department’s social media initiatives with the Health Institute and Nutrition Services.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: A Bachelor’s degree in Nutrition, Dietetics or another closely related curriculum recognized by the American Dietetic Association which includes a minimum of 15 semester hours in foods and nutrition; plus two years experience in the field of nutrition; OR, an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

License: Must possess and maintain a valid Missouri driver’s license while employed by the City of St. Louis.  Must possess valid driver’s license at the time of filing application and be able to present it upon request.  Please note type of license, number, class and expiration date on the Employment Application. 

Documentation of academic credentials must be submitted upon request.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:  Registration as a Dietitian in the State of Missouri and/or a Master’s degree in Public Health, Community Nutrition or Nutrition and two years of experience in nutrition and dietetic therapy in a public health or community health setting.  Experience with grant writing and social marketing/design programs to reach specific ethnic groups is also desirable.

The Director of Personnel may, in their discretion, accept alternate documentation.

CITY RESIDENTS PREFERENCE POINTS: City residents who pass an examination for a position in the classified service and do not receive any other preference will receive a five (5) point preference on a scale of 100 points on the exam. An additional one (1) point shall be added to the passing score of City residents who receive any other preference on a scale of 100 points.  City residents must have resided in the City for at least one (1) year at the time of filing their application to be eligible for the preference points.
