Position Specifications

Incumbents in this position are responsible for planning, organizing, assigning, and supervising Food Establishment Inspectors performing food and beverage control functions and serving in the Incident Command Structure (ICS) as required. Duties include controlling program operations to ensure objectives and standards are established and consistent with Department of Health (DOH) and bureau goals; ensuring compliance with City of St. Louis rules and regulations via Orders of Cessation and Embargo; processing and closing out Citizen Service Bureau (CSB) complaints; conducting site/field inspections; and supervising and training subordinate staff.

Minimum Qualifications

A Bachelor’s degree which includes at least 30 hours of basic science coursework and a math or statistics class; plus two years of experience working in environmental or public health.  OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

License:  Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license while employed by the City of St. Louis.  Must possess a valid driver's license at the time of filing application and be able to present it upon request.  Please note type of license, number, class and expiration date on the Employment Application. 

Certification Must be able to obtain Registered Environmental Health Specialist/Registered Sanitarian Certification from the National Environmental Health Association within 11 months of hire as a condition of successfully completing working test period. Incumbents must also successfully complete training in Hotel, Motel and Childcare License Inspections, Certified Pool Operator Inspections and Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) during working test period.

An official transcript documenting qualifying educational achievement and coursework must be submitted upon request.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS: A Master’s degree in Environmental Health from a program accredited by the National Environmental Health Science and Protection Accreditation Council.  CEHT certification by NEHA.  Previous supervisory experience.

VETERAN'S PREFERENCE POINTS: To be eligible for veteran's preference points, the applicant must submit a copy of their DD 214 Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty with the Employment Application or upon request.  The Director of Personnel may, in their discretion, accept alternate documentation.

CITY RESIDENTS PREFERENCE POINTS: City residents who pass an examination for a position in the classified service and do not receive any other preference will receive a five (5) point preference on a scale of 100 points on the exam. An additional one (1) point shall be added to the passing score of City residents who receive any other preference on a scale of 100 points.  City residents must have resided in the City for at least one (1) year at the time of filing their application to be eligible for the preference points.  

Some positions may require candidates to pass a “Character Investigation” prior to appointment.
