St. Louis, MO- The Board of Commissioners of The Land Reutilization Authority of The City of St. Louis will reauthorize the current Garden Lease Program allowing individuals or organizations to lease an LRA-owned parcel of vacant land, for $1.00 per year, to garden and maintain. LRA is seeking public comments in advance of the next meeting of the Land Reutilization Authority of the City of St. Louis Board of Commissioners.
Written comments will be accepted until May 23, 2018. Comments will be reviewed by the Commissioners and staff upon receipt, and the policy is expected to be voted upon at the May 30, 2018 Land Reutilization Authority of the City of St. Louis Board of Commissioners meeting. Comments can be submitted using the Garden Lease Public Comment Form or may be sent via mail to:
The Garden Lease Program is designed to enlist schools, businesses, neighborhood groups and not-for-profits to beautify and maintain one or more vacant lots in their area. The program encourages organizations and individuals to create vegetable and/or flower gardens, to help improve their community, bring neighbors together, and reduce the locations of crime, dumping and decay in their neighborhood. The program also helps relieve the burden of maintaining the thousands of lots owned by the Land Reutilization Authority (LRA). New community gardens will also be favored in areas without previously established community gardens.
The Commission had previously approved granting five-year garden leases which could be cancelled, with or without cause, upon thirty days’ written notice to the lessee. The program was last reauthorized in 2004.
