Red Tape Committee Seeks Public Input From Business Owners and Residents

Today, the Board of Aldermen’s Special Committee on Reducing Red Tape opened its submission process for public input. Residents and business owners can use the online form to report their experience navigating processes at City Hall. Submissions will be used by the committee to steer its investigative work and to design policy solutions or recommend actions that address burdensome regulation.

“Our goal is to make the process for opening a business in our city easier for small business owners and entrepreneurs. Right now, people have to navigate an opaque and onerous system in St. Louis compared to other areas in the region. We’re here to change that experience and make St. Louis the clear, first choice for businesses,” said committee chair and 2nd Ward Alderman Tom Oldenburg.

The committee’s first meeting is scheduled for Thursday, June 29 at 3:30 p.m. via Zoom. The meeting will feature a presentation from the Institute for Justice on their Barriers to Business report, which includes the City of St. Louis in its findings.

"Beyond contributing to our local economy, small businesses are the center of our city’s rich and unique culture. We need to support entrepreneurs so they can find success and build a life in St. Louis—particularly new Americans who have chosen to make St. Louis home. To support these owners, we must have a clear and responsive government," said committee vice chair and 6th Ward Alderwoman Daniela Velázquez.
