Gathering Utility Data for Benchmarking
Learn what data is required to submit a benchmarking report, and how to gather the data.
Overview
ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager requires the following basic building details for all buildings:
- Property Name, Address, and a main point of contact
- Total Gross Floor Area
- Year Built (can be estimated)
- Occupancy (%)
- St. Louis Building ID (required for compliance)
Additional required details vary by building type. Refer to the ENERGY STAR Data Collection Worksheet for a full list of required details for your building type.
Required Utility Data
Gather utility data for water and all fuel types used at your property, including:
- Water (ccf)
- Electricity—purchased or generated onsite (kWh)
- Natural Gas (ccf)
- District Steam (Klbs)
- Energy purchased in bulk such as Fuel Oil, propane, diesel, coal, etc.
Utility data needed:
- Start Date of Billing Cycle
- End Date of Billing Cycle
- Usage
- Cost (optional)
- Is this an estimation of usage? (Yes/No)
Additional Data
Ask for additional guidance if any of the following applies to your building:
- Generate green power onsite
- Building isn’t individually metered, or is part of a campus
- Multi-tenant building
Tips on Gathering Utility Data
- Refer to the ENERGY STAR Data Collection Worksheet for a full list of required data for your property.
- Access historical energy use data using your past bills, or by setting up accounts on your utility websites (see presentation for more specific instructions):
St. Louis Water Data
- Log into your account. Once logged in, click on the Consumption Tab to access your previous bills.
- Note that water billing is quarterly, and that water is billed in CCF (centum cubic feet). The read date listed on each bill should be entered as the billing period end date in ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager.

- St. Louis City Water allows customers to look up their quarterly water utilization on their website without an account. Follow the steps below, or download this PDF.
- Open your web browser and in the address bar, enter http://www.stlwater.com/usage_search.php
- Search for your billing address by entering the address number in the Number field and the street name in the Street Name field and clicking the Search button
- In Found Billing Addresses, click the link next to your billing address to be taken to the Utilization page.The Utilization page shows the total water consumption charged to this address on each bill for the past 3 years. The Bill Date column shows the date of each water bill, the Total Charged Consumption column shows the total usage on that bill measured in Hundred Cubic Feet (CCF), and the For Period Ending column notes the end of the billed period.

Multi-Tenant Buildings Only
You may request aggregated whole-building data from Ameren Missouri & Spire. Use our Utility Release Form to submit requests to Ameren Missouri and/or Spire to the contact methods listed:

Requesting Steam Consumption History
Buildings which use steam from Ashley Energy (formerly Trigen) may request monthly steam consumption volumes.
