New User Guide to Building Energy Performance

Overview

The Building Energy Performance Standards (BEPS) are a set of energy efficiency standards set by the Building Energy Improvement Board. The Board set these standards so that commercial and municipal buildings in St. Louis that are over 50,000 square feet will become more energy efficient.

Qualifications and Exemptions

Almost all buildings in St. Louis that are 50,000 square feet or larger are required by law to comply with the Building Energy Performance Standards and submit a Benchmarking Report each year. Some buildings are exempt, but must file for an exemption each year. Find out if your building qualifies, and learn how to file for an exemption.

Targets and Compliance

The Building Energy Improvement Board set energy efficiency targets for eligible buildings to meet. The Office of Building Performance outlines the paths building owners may take to meet these targets.

Failure to meet energy efficiency targets can result in fines up to $1000 per year.

Gathering and Requesting Utility Data

Each year, owners or managers of eligibile buildings must gather their utility data from providers and submit a benchmarking report indicating that they've met their energy efficiency targets.

To submit a report you must have a building ID supplied by the Office of Building Performance. Once you have a building ID, you can begin planning to submit your report.
