Dispose of Waste from Remodeling or Renovating

If you have large quantities of old lumber, plaster, roofing, or other building materials to discard, do not overload the dumpsters with these materials. Make arrangements with a commercial waste hauler or bring it to one of the City's transfer stations.

Every year, St. Louis City residents can bring up to 12 loads of trash, yard waste, recycling, bulk or BOAT (car batteries, motor oil, appliances and car tires) items to the City Transfer Stations.  

Commercial trucks are not allowed. Rental trucks are acceptable.

Dumping Hours

Monday-Friday: 8:00 AM and 4:00 PM except on City-observed holidays.

Saturday-Sunday: CLOSED. Weekend service discontinued as of June 30, 2023

1. Bring proof of identity and residency documents.
   For Homeowners:
   • your driver’s license or State ID, and
   • a recent combined Water/Solid Waste Fee statement that demonstrates you own property in the City.
   For Renters:
   • your driver’s license or State ID, and
   • any other recent utility bill that demonstrates you live in city. 
   • Confirm that the property owner pays the Solid Waste Fee, if the property owner does not, renters are not eligible for the drop-off service.
2. Prior to arrival check the following:
   • Identify items that can be recycled or reused and dispose of them as suggested.
   • Confirm you have no Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) in your load. HHW is not accepted at Transfer Stations. Plan to dispose them properly at no cost to you at a HHW drop-off site.
3. Confirm the load size is no larger than a load which could be carried in a 1/2 ton pick up truck.
4. Ensure your vehicle conforms to the vehicle requirements:
   • vehicle dimension no larger then 5 feet x 8 feet x 4 feet high.
   • No modified pickups or trailers.
   • No combination of loaded truck and trailer.
   • No dump trucks or enclosed trucks except passenger vans (U-Haul must meet dimension requirement).
   • No vehicles with sideboards, railings, or stake bodies. 
5. Review the lists of what each transfer station accepts and does not accept. Confirm your load includes only items in the accepted list.
   • North Transfer Station
   • South Transfer Station

• At the Transfer Station you will be asked to show proof of City residency. 
• Residents will place their loads in containers as directed by the foreman.
• Anyone suspected of hauling for hire will be rejected.
• Refuse from any business will not be accepted, therefore any load which appears to be commercial waste will be rejected.
• Refuse from charities, churches, or other non-profit organizations will not be accepted.

There is no charge for this service for City residents.

Loads will be inspected on-site by Refuse staff who will direct vehicle to appropriate disposal location(s).
